This is a revised version. Ludger Deitmer, University of Bremen: In this article we look at the role of researchers and practitioners involved in these innovation processes. To what extent can fundamental changes in VET-institutions and on the side of VET professionals be supported by action research. Action research is discussed in Germany in terms of “Begleitforschung” (accompanying research) and has a long tradition in VET and in other action oriented disciplines like pedagogics, work science or engineering (Gerds/Fischer/Deitmer 2002).

by Elly de Bruijn & Anneke Westerhuis, 13 July 2004 :: Usually, innovation in vocational education and training in The Netherlands involves implementing a particular concept in educational practice. Actors within schools and other training institutions may be inspired by a concept but act on the basis of their own interpretations. A systematic relationship between ‘the concept’ and the linked development of educational practice is lacking. Methodological approaches which genuinely link conceptual developments to innovating educational practice are, however, based upon this relationship.
