Report of the chair of VETNET for the General assembly Geneva, 2006

This is Ludger Deitmer's summary report on VETNET at ECER 2007, covering: Original VETNET functions, 2006 participant proportation by country, The session types, What has been achieved?, What is missing for the day to day work for the annual conference?, and Where is VETNET still very weak?

Original VETNET functions:

  • to promote research collaboration in the European research area and beyond;
  • to provide through the provision of the VETNET programme for ECER a stimulating research forum for discussion and debate
  • to organise other European conference and workshops as appropriate;
  • to report annually to EERA;
  • to administer VETNET affairs and any financial matters concerning VETNET efficiently;
  • to support good communications within the European research area by the use of the web (http://www.vet-research.net) and electronic and other newsletters as appropriate and
  • to launch an academic journal of international standing (International Journal for Technical and Vocational Education and Training Research)

- from 160: (1st) germany, (2nd) swiss, (3rd) finland, (4th) england

The session types

What has been achieved?

  • Increasing attendance for the conferences in Hamburg (03), Crete(04), Dublin (05) and Geneve (06)
  • Active involvement of programme chairs (Patiniotis (04); Nyhan (05) and Stalder (06))
  • Rising interest from abroad: Canada, Autralia etc.
  • double blind review system
  • Quality of the proposals improved
  • Wide spectrum of contributions concerning VET environment, VET-systems, learning processes and VET professional development on micro, meso and makro level
  • Established two joint plenary sessions: opening colloquium and VETNET forum
  • Equipping the Homepage with detailed programme abstracts and list of authors (as during the last years)
  • Over 550 people have been registered on the page

What is missing for the day to day work for the annual conference?

  • electronic support for the review process while handling 200 reviews
  • conference proceedings needed (last one Hamburg)
  • Electronic VETNET newsletter
  • four parallel sessions is a problem
  • continuing the homepage service
  • number of applications by participants may be reduced to one instead of two contributions
  • nine symposia may be a too many
  • strengthen the European dimension on some of the papers
  • widening publication channels: international journal

Where is VETNET still very weak?

  • Giving political inputs and memos to the current debate on the future VET development in Europe.
  • Advocating and supporting the research functions within relevant European programmes
  • Dialogue with the European Commision on these issues
